SCS is a private for-profit company dedicated to the goal of sustainable development.  Founded in 1984, SCS is recognized internationally for its third-party evaluation and certification programs in the environmental and food safety/quality arenas.  Its programs and technical expertise span a wide cross-section of the economy including food and agriculture, forestry, floral, coffee, fisheries, energy, consumer products, manufacturing and retailing, and the home improvement and construction sectors.  SCS certification programs are accredited by such organizations as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), International Standards Organization (ISO) and the USDA National Organic Program.
