The Role: The Celery breeder assistant has the opportunity to incorporate multidisciplinary knowledge into practical work while contributing to the success of new variety development for vegetable production. The main role of this position is to support the breeder in the field of breeding, seed increase, and other related research projects proposed by the breeder, in nursery, field and laboratory settings.

Areas of Responsibility: This role will be engaged and oversee, but is not limited to:

  • Responsible for germplasm and program property inventories.
  • Accountable for Breeding/PD trials including seeding, scheduling and assisting transplanting, drawing trial location maps, and monitoring harvest estimates in a timely manner.
  • Assist breeder in trial evaluation and selection. Dig selections and transplant/pot them in the greenhouse or in the field.
  • Oversee and assist grower in all aspects of seed production, including cage installation, maintenance, pollination, seed harvesting, cleaning, treating, sanitizing and packaging.
  • Water, fertilize, weed and spray plants in greenhouses as needed.
  • Establish good rapport with cross functional department/nurseries.
  • Supervise, train and manage temporary helpers.
  • Maintain all work places and storage areas, and spray & irrigation equipment in good condition.
  • Travel within driving distance occasionally: Oxnard, CA & Yuma, AZ

Qualifications/Additional Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • A high school diploma and /or an associate degree in agriculture.
  • BS with plant breeding, genetics, agronomy or biology preferred
  • 2-3 years of experience in farming, harvesting or seed industry preferred.
  • Possess or be willing to acquire pesticide applicator’s certificate/license.
  • Working knowledge of vegetable/seed production, or plant breeding.
  • Great focus and attention to detail, drive tasks to closure with minimal error.
  • Must have a clean DMV (driving record)

Language & Communication Skills: 

  • Bi-lingual in English/Spanish preferred
  • Must have excellent written, verbal interpersonal and cross-cultural skills to communicate and work with everyone, from the field, warehouse, to customers, team-members, and management.
  • Must be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from customers, team members, and managers.

Mathematical Skills: Must have the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability: 

  • Solve practical problems
  • Able to troubleshoot and problem-solve in a professional and timely manner.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e., Word and Excel) and Internet software.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment: 

  • This position performs the duties in the following environments: Warehouse, Mill and Office which are subject to hot and cold temperatures and a wide variance of noise
  • In this position, the employee will sit at a desk and operate a computer, and keyboard; hear; talk; stand; walk; have visual acuity to review and prepare written documentation
  • Have the ability to understand speech at normal room levels and on the telephone
  • Have manual dexterity to operate a telephone and computer
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and color vision
  • This position requires the employee to lift up to 50 lbs. horizontally and vertically, bend, stoop, stand, twist, and reach
  • This position may require working outside of normal business hours.
