Job description

The job requirements include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Strategic Thinking: Leading the development of comprehensive brand strategy, considering consumer, category, competitive, and market trends. Able to confidently present strategic, data-driven recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Profit & Loss: Create and justify marketing budgets as part of the annual Plans to support marketing strategies and campaigns. Continuously analyze sales numbers in comparison to the marketing budget to understand the marketing spend ROI, determine the actual profit margin, and decide which campaigns were most effective.
  • Product Innovation: Ability to identify, research, and commercialize opportunities for new product and packaging innovation that align with our brand strategy and help deliver our annual operating Plan.
  • Business Analytics: Able to use syndicated, consumer, and customer data to identify business insights and recommend solutions that optimize results. Develop monthly/quarterly business reviews and ad-hoc analyses. Adept with IRI, Nielsen, customer databases, etc.
  • Marketing: Manages the briefing and development of consumer communication plans in collaboration with our supporting agencies. Able to evaluate, track, and optimize performance.
  • Channel/Customer Marketing: Understands the business at an account/channel level and collaborates to develop custom marketing programs to drive the business in those accounts/channels.
  • Project Manager: Ability to lead large cross-functional projects with multiple stakeholders, complex inputs, and time-sensitive deadlines; effectively manage workloads by prioritizing and multi-tasking. Demonstrate a sense of urgency to drive impact.

As Director of Marketing, you will collaborate with various internal and external teams to research and analyze market, consumer, and competitive insights; create new brands and products; develop meaningful and ownable positionings; determine pricing and promotional spending; develop packaging and graphics; design successful sales materials and promotional campaigns; manage trade shows and other promotional events, and support Sales. You should also have an orientation to a sales-driven organization and be comfortable working closely with Sales and their customers. You will have a complete understanding of all distribution channels, retail account-specific pricing, trade spending, promotions, and advertising activities. Ultimately, you will be responsible for all aspects of building your brands.

General Position Responsibilities:

  • Lead all new product activities utilizing our stage-gate process, including concept/ideation, assessment, development, commercialization/launch, and ongoing execution/tracking.
  • Analyze brand positioning, consumer insights, and account insights.
  • Translate brand elements into plans and go-to-market strategies.
  • Engage retailer marketing and category management teams to develop and execute account-specific marketing programs and determine which are strongest in terms of driving cost-effective trial and repeat.
  • Lead creative development to motivate the target audience to “take action.”
  • Establish performance specifications, cost and price parameters, market applications, and sales estimates.
  • Measure and report performance of all marketing campaigns, and assess ROI and KPIs.
  • Monitor market trends, research consumer markets, and competitors’ activities.
  • Monitor product distribution and consumer reactions.
  • Align the company around the brand’s direction, choices, and tactics.
  • Conduct research to identify market trends and target customers’ preferences.
  • Create marketing plans to increase brand awareness.
  • Oversee new and ongoing marketing and advertising activities.
  • Ensure strong brand presence in online and offline channels.
  • Appoint, manage, and evaluate all external marketing and market research agencies.
  • Review packaging and positioning of products and suggest improvements
  • Research competition and identify opportunities for growth
  • Ensure brand and product consistency and manage the product line
  • Assist in developing effective media campaigns and choosing appropriate distribution channels
  • Update the pricing of products to align with the company’s long-term objectives and beat the competition

General Position Requirements:

  • 5 years minimum proven experience as a brand leader
  • Degree in Marketing or a related field, Master’s level preferred
  • National or major regional brand experience, with a proven ability to develop brand and marketing strategies at the national and account levels, and communicate recommendations to distributors, brokers, and retailers
  • Brand level P&L experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • High Emotional Intelligence; you’re a positive person by nature
  • Supervisory and agency management experience
  • An open mind with solid innovation skills, a creative and artistic vision, and an ability to perceive and empathize with the way consumers think and feel in order to generate meaningful strategies for building a core audience
  • Excellent at research and data analysis, and identifying patterns and trends to develop new brand strategies that attract customers and succeed over the competition
  • Experience in identifying target audiences and devising effective campaigns
  • Collaborative skills to accept and incorporate ideas into strategies
  • Strong leadership skills to lead groups, give clear direction and be decisive
  • Time management and organization in order to meet strict deadlines
  • Ability to recognize trends and stay ahead of them with marketing best practices
  • Excellent understanding of the full marketing mix including traditional and digital advertising, internet marketing campaigns, promotions, and the retail and foodservice distribution channels-including account-specific marketing
  • Strong analytical skills partnered with a creative mind, including knowledge of and experience with key computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite, Google Analytics, SEO best practices, Social Media,
  • Advertising, Website development, Web analytic tools
  • Experience in use and analysis of syndicated data (IRI, Nielsen) and/or account data (e.g. Kroger’s 84.51̊ database) to develop category insights and recommend action
  • Data-driven thinking and an affinity for numbers
  • Flexible and comfortable working in a constantly changing environment
  • Ability to travel nationally (33%) and, occasionally, with little notice
  • Due to Covid 19, the company currently works remotely. As Covid restrictions ease, you are ideally located within a few hours travel to San Diego/Orange County California (where the company leadership is located) to meet as required. We do not anticipate reopening a corporate office in the near term.
