We are seeking an experienced Operations Supervisor, who along with the other supervisors in our team manage our application department. This position would be responsible for supervising a team of foremen and operators.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise Spray Operators, maintain consistent communication with the spray foremen to ensure clarity of intent and clarity of desired outcomes. Read, interpret, and translate pesticide labels to spray operators as needed. Monitor and oversee teams to ensure safe and accurate spray applications.
  • Plan and coordinate pre-operation set-up tasks with foremen to ensure complete understanding of crops to be sprayed, labor requirements and chemical availability. Supervise staff to ensure all personal protective equipment (PPE), are in proper working order for applicators/operators.
  • Work with maintenance crew to ensure proper functioning of equipment. Recommend machinery, equipment and supplies necessary for optimum performance. Verify operators’ knowledge of tasks and specifics of the operating and loading procedures. Work with safety department to oversee training and education on the safe use and operation of equipment and spraying techniques.
  • Apply knowledge of weather condition, droplet size, drift, and obstructions to specific applications.
  • Keep accurate records of employee time, equipment usage, routine maintenance, and fuel usage. Maintains records on chemical application activities
  • Promote good safety practices.
  • Work with Safety team to develop and assists in the development of standard operating procedures (SOP) for all application operations.
  • Work with human resources to recommend personnel actions (promotions, wage adjustments, demotions, discipline, discharge, etc.); administer routine performance appraisals; and interview/select employees. Emphasis is to be placed on maintaining staffing at the appropriate levels to operate at peak efficiency and in developing continuity in key positions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bilingual required.
  • (3+) years of crop protection application experience, possession of a current Qualified Applicators License (QAL) is a plus. Valid California State Driver’s License required. If a candidate does not have a QAL, they must be able to acquire the license within the first year of employment.
  • Knowledge and skill in applying crop protection materials and fertilizer to vegetables, raspberries, strawberries, grapes, and small grains.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures for personnel recruitment, selection, training, and labor relations.
  • Knowledge of farm equipment and machinery and the ability to operate and to effectively train others in the safe operation of such.
  • Awareness of coverage requirements, weather conditions, and obstructions that prevent acceptable application of crop protection materials and/or fertilizers.
  • Skill and ability to motivate, develop and direct people as they work, identifying the best people for the job.
  • Skill and ability to communicate and provide information to foremen and applicators by telephone, in written form, e-mail or in person.
  • Skill and ability to communicate with persons outside the organization, representing the company to customers, the public and other external sources, by telephone, in written form, e-mail or in person.
  • Skill and ability to work independently using effective time management and organizational skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed primarily outdoors in adverse weather conditions on and around equipment and machinery. Must be physically capable of lifting approximately 50 pounds (occasionally heavier), working extended hours (seasonally), working outdoors in the fields. Potential hazards exist when working around crop protection products, farm equipment and machinery.
