Topco Associates is currently seeking an Associate Sourcing Manager for melons for our Produce team in West Palm Beach, FL.

Under general supervision and administrative direction of a Sourcing Manager, the Associate Sourcing Manager is responsible for purchasing products at a cost to achieve maximum member participation and to enhance the competitive position and profitability of Topco member companies.  They are also responsible for product and program development in assigned areas to support Topco's Mission of being the most effective provider of goods and services to members.


  • Achievement of annual sales, productivity, category review, volume incentive and NPE goals for assigned categories.
  • Conceptualize and create goals, objectives and action plans for product categories, with the purpose of meeting member needs, achieving full member participation, and ensuring that product and services are provided to the advantage of members.
  • Employs superior communication skills to establish credibility with members to expand member participation in existing programs.
  • Analyzes department finances and maintains sound financial position by developing operating budgets, forecasts, controlling expenses, and taking responsibility for achieving sales, patronage, packaging, and expense budgets for assigned area.
  • Enhances the ability of departmental associates to deliver quality service to members by managing and developing subordinates; this includes instituting, reviewing, and following up on on-the-job training programs, conducting performance appraisals of direct reports, and recommending promotions, merit raises, and other actions as appropriate.
  • Stays current with industry, market, and consumer trends by attending conferences/trade shows and reading trade periodicals and information and applies this information creatively to develop assigned product areas and enhance members’ competitiveness in the marketplace.
  • Selects products and negotiates price and delivery terms, plans and schedules product purchases, to ensure optimal cost efficiencies to members.
  • Negotiates with authorized suppliers for promotional allowances, volume incentives, improved terms and tiers. Negotiates agreements with suppliers to ensure product availability to meet members’ current and future needs.
  • Employs knowledge of industry and market conditions to assist in the preparation of forecasts and implements buying beneficial to Topco members to ensure maximum member savings and efficiencies. Regularly reviews market conditions to evaluate their effect on products and programs. Recommends the need for program changes, new procurement or market strategies, product introductions and discontinuations.
  • Initiates, manages, and ensures timely completion of category reviews.
  • Investigates alternative distribution and cost options to achieve member savings.
  • Conducts reviews of volume incentive programs to ensure maximum tiers and payouts are achieved.
  • Uses superior communication skills to keep members informed of promotions, cost advantages, product availability, market trends, vendor and item changes, and related information to develop member support and maximum participation.
  • Obtains required legal documentation from suppliers and ensures compliance with legal restrictions, buying polices and guidelines.
  • Ensures that product packaging is competitive with brand standards and maintains sufficient packaging inventory to meet members' day-to-day orders and future needs.
  • Promotes Topco's Mission to deliver total consumer and member satisfaction in product quality by participating in the establishment of quality standards and working with Quality Assurance and other quality assurance groups (e.g., selectors, field inspectors) to ensure that specifications and standards are met on a continuing basis.
  • Develops a supplier base by evaluating current suppliers on a regular basis, and evaluating and recommending new suppliers to include domestic and international sources of supply.
  • Maintains and develops assigned product areas by making field trips to members, suppliers, and potential suppliers as necessary.
  • Motivates and trains support staff to achieve communicated goals.
  • Enhances efficiency by streamlining existing processes when possible.
  • Promotes the achievement of corporate goals and objectives by cultivating a thorough understanding of Topco’s Mission statement and relating it to member needs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Accurate and timely completion of performance appraisals for direct reports.

  • Timely research and preparation of material for projects and reports with a desire to learn new things.
  • Ongoing effective and cooperative communication among departments.



Four-year college degree preferred in Business Management/Administration, Marketing or related field preferred.

Technical skills:

  • Must have strong PC skills in MS Office package: Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Strong analytical skills.

Previous experience:

  • Produce experience required, fruit and melon experience preferred.
  • 3-5+ years of business experience.
  • 3-5+ years of purchasing experience.
  • Project management and coordination.
  • Substantial customer interaction/management.
  • Public speaking/presentation training skills required.
  • Supervisory experience a plus.
  • Experience with product introduction a plus.

Other qualifications:

  • Able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment.
  • Able to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms with people at all levels, including member personnel.
  • Proven ability to manage others, inspire confidence and interact with others at all levels.
  • Able to interpret industry data and make business decisions based on the material, and to perform basic mathematical calculations on a regular basis.
  • Ability to negotiate successfully in marketing/buying situations.
  • Familiarity with major product sources, industry practices, quality levels, packaging and logistics.
  • Ability to speak publicly and make presentations to groups of various sizes.
  • Able and willing to travel by plane, car, and other means of transportation as required.
  • Successfully complete Topco’s internal purchasing training course.
