JOB TITLE: Coastal Hay & AG OPERATIONS MANAGER

REPORTS TO: General Manager

STATUS: Full-Time, Exempt

LOCATION: Santa Ynez Valley

Coastal Hay & Ag provides Santa Barbara County’s respected agricultural community with superior quality, predominantly locally grown feed. In addition, we offer a high level of service and integrity when establishing new plantings for permanent pastures, hay crops and vineyard ground preparation.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for the daily supervision of Coastal Hay & Ag, including determining the most effective use of personnel and equipment to meet quality standards.

  • Approaches their job with an ownership mentality, the vision to see the big picture, forecast future needs, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Direct and schedule overall daily activities of personnel and equipment; including irrigation, tractor activities, spraying and harvesting.
  • Keep General Manager abreast of CH&A activities daily, and complete weekly reports for equipment and personnel usage.
  • Excellent oral and written communication aptitude with the skill to communicate with different Personality types.
  • Routinely oversee progress and quality of work performed by CH&A personnel.
  • Evaluate crop health and status. Adjust farming plans as needed, implement pest and disease control, irrigation plans, etc.
  • Planning, scheduling, and project management experience necessary.
  • Ability to prioritize operations given multiple priorities and conflicting demands
  • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures regarding chemicals, equipment, and machinery.
  • Effectively implement, improve, and reinforce the company’s environmental health and safety programs.
  • Expertise with machinery and equipment operations and repair including tractors, cultivators, planters, swathers, rakes, balers, harobeds, hay squeeze, and hand tools/power tools for repairing equipment.
  • Responsible and accountable for quality control, environmental stewardship, efficiencies with respect to labor, and production.

Safety Practices, Policies, and Programs:

  • Ensure that safety is the first priority for every employee and never compromise safety for productivity.
  • Lead by example and be a good safety role model for CH&A overall and attend all required safety trainings.
  • Ensure that employee attend all required safety trainings.
  • Ensure all company equipment is working properly.
  • Continually inspect each property, shop, and piece of equipment for potential safety hazards.
  • Address each safety hazard identified timely.
  • Oversee sign up of new CH&A employees and ensure accuracy of all related paperwork.
  • Ensure the professionalism and appropriate skill set of all new hires.
  • Respect other CH&A departments and discuss potential internal transfers with the appropriate manager ahead of time to reach consensus.
  • Assist in HR related matters; report any employee issues and/or questions to Human Resources.
  • Oversee timely delivery of paychecks.
  • Create, monitor, and follow budgets and raise awareness of any issues to CH&A owner and client.
  • Enroll in continued education classes, as needed.
  • Enforce company policies.
  • Attend all mandatory CH&A meetings.
  • Work together to make CH&A stronger, more professional, and more successful.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent work experience.
  • Mandatory 5 years related experience overseeing hay farm operations – putting up hay, managing irrigations, operating/repairing equipment and managing staff.
  • Must be a strong manager who demonstrates effective communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships at all levels, both internal and external to the company.
  • Able to work in various weather conditions.
  • Must be competent with computers, systems, and relevant software applications.
  • Must have a strong work ethic.
  • Willing to work long days, including nights and weekends as needed throughout the year, especially during harvest.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to read and write basic English.
  • Strong understanding of math.
  • Self-Starter.
  • Honest and Trustworthy.
  • Bilingual in Spanish required.
