POSITION TITLE: Safety Specialist 

REPORTS TO: Automated Harvesting HR Manager

BASIC FUNCTION: The Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing, supervising, monitoring and enforcing the company’s safety programs, policies and procedures that meet OSHA, CAL/OSHA, GAP, GHP and other applicable requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Evaluate the organization’s procedures, facilities, crews and equipment by conducting inspections to identify unsafe conditions.
  • Implement safeguards and solutions for all unsafe or improper conditions or procedures.
  • Perform safety audits for FLC crews working with AH.
  • Follow up on audit corrective action items to insure remedies are being completed within the established timeline.
  • Ensure all AH departments comply with all current safety regulations and that all employees are aware of safety and accident events.
  • Plan and conduct safety training orientation with new and re-hire employees.
  • Schedule on-going safety training; including, tailgate sessions and in-depth safety trainings for each department’s specific safety requirements.
  • Collaborate with HR to ensure safety training records are maintained accurately and in compliance with OSHA & CAL/OSHA recordkeeping standards.
  • Perform incident response & investigation as required.
  • Produce instructive verbal and written warnings to address safety infractions.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and managers to deliver verbal & written warnings.
  • Maintain certifications and continuing education related to occupational safety.
  • Keep up-to-date on state/federal requirements as they relate to occupational safety.
  • Attend management meetings to share information regarding safety issues.
  • Comply, and inspire & motivate others to comply, with all company procedures and policies.
  • Report all injuries to supervisor and HR immediately regardless of how slight they might seem, and train employees & supervisors to report injuries immediately.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety desired
  • Certifications may include:
    • OSHA Certification
    • Occupational Health and Safety Technologist
    • Certified Safety Professional
    • Certified Loss Control Specialist
  • Agricultural work experience in an Occupational Health & Safety role

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bilingual (English / Spanish) required; must read, write and speak both languages
  • Able to travel seasonally with the company from Salinas, CA. to Yuma, AZ.
  • Passionate and enthusiastic about health & safety
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills; including professional email composition
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills with high proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Able to work independently and produce results
  • Dedicated to collaborative team-work
  • Capable of working outdoors in a variety of environments; including, cold, hot, foggy, wet, dry, muddy and dusty conditions
  • Able to walk on uneven ground to arrive at field locations, carry training materials, and stand and/or sit to present safety trainings both outdoors or indoors
  • Flexible to work irregular hours and days as needed to accomplish company safety goals
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to be covered by the company’s insurance policy
