Job Info Job Title: Quality Control Inspector Location: Visalia, CA Job Number: 11658 Posted Date: 2/18/2021 Job description Topco Associates is currently seeking a Quality Control Inspector - Berries for the Produce team in Visalia, CA. The Quality Control Inspector conducts comprehensive inspection of produce products and ranks produce based on Topco inspection ranking criteria. This role works closely with Topco produce staff to enhance procurement of highest quality product at the most economical cost. Responsibilities: Exercises effective communication skills to promote and enhance the Topco produce program with members and vendors. Is intimately familiar with USDA standards and is qualified to provide receiving inspection training for member receivers and newly-assigned field inspectors. Conducts timely, thorough, and objective product inspections to ensure that buyers are kept abreast of product quality and condition. Initiates timely communication with Topco buyers to provide crop forecast information, potential market conditions, weather impact, and general assessment of anticipated quality and condition. In coordination with Topco buyers, initiates calls to member buyers to provide inspection reports of selected products being loaded on their trucks. Maintains current knowledge of assigned products in order to recognize and formulate on-the-spot or special deals that provide an attractive value for the membership. As field inspector, ensures fair and equitable treatment of all suppliers, and promotes the Topco program with “preferred” suppliers. Demonstrates the initiative and versatility to handle other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Education High school diploma preferred, or equivalent USDA Inspection Certification preferred Technical skills Computer literate/proficient. Previous experience Produce inspection/QA experience required Some sales, produce retail, or grower-associated experience desirable. Thorough knowledge of fresh produce buying and marketing experience with a broker, supplier, or buying organization, or previous experience in wholesale/retail produce areas. Other qualifications Ability to communicate effectively with others at all levels (including members, suppliers, growers, and truckers) orally and in writing on a regular basis. Ability to differentiate colors and degrees/shades of colors. Ability to work in refrigerated storage facilities while conducting inspections for up to 4 hours. Temperatures can go as low as 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Ability to operate testing/grading equipment (e.g., refractometer, penetrometer) and safely use sharp cutting equipment (e.g, knives). Ability to lift produce shipping containers which weigh up to 50 lbs. each. Ability and willingness to travel by air, car, truck, or other means of transportation as needed. Ability and willingness to work after hours and weekends as required. Ability and willingness to travel seasonally throughout appropriate growing regions as necessary and be away from home base for up to 3 weeks at a time.
